As per Hindu scriptures, gemstones and their positive and negative effects on human beings have been known and accepted over 1000s of years. As per the ancient system of "sidhereal" or jyotish astrology, there are nine planets that influence a human being throughout his or her life. The position of one of these planets at the time of birth of a person, in relation to stars/ constellations in the universe determines its influence on the life of a person.  A planet which is dominant at the time of birth of a person usually becomes his or her birth-star or planet. It is also called the ruling planet.

The  9 planets considered by Vedic astrologers are :- the Sun, Moon,  Mars,  Mercury,  Jupiter, Venus,  Saturn,  Rahu (Moon’s north node) and Ketu (Moon’s south node). The outer planets of Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto are not used in ancient classical Vedic astrology.

Ancient vedic scriptures have assigned 9 gemstones for these planets.

As per "Brihat Jataka" : 

" Manikyam dinanayakasya vimalam muktaphalam shitagoh 
   maheyasya cha vidrumam marakatam saumyasya-garutmakam 
  devejyasya cha pushparagam sura-achryasya vajram shaneh 
  nilam nirmalamanyayoshcha gadite gomeda-vaiduryake. " 

 Meaning :

The Sun's gem is pure ruby, Moon is (natural) pearl, Mars is red coral, Mercury is emerald, Jupiter is yellow sapphire, Venus is diamond, Saturn is blue sapphire, Rahu is hessonite, and Ketu is cat's eye.

In this important sloka the words, "sujatyam-amalam" (sujati=high born, and amala=completely pure or flawless) are very significant. Only clean top quality gems are considered to be auspicious.

The 9 gems for these 9 planets are called the "navaratna", meaning 9 jewels, and the substitute gems are called "uparatna".  While choosing which gemstone to wear, it is important to select it after a detailed study of one’s birth-chart, the most important feature being the moon sign or the "Star / Nakshatra". By keeping your planetary gemstone in touch with your body, you can tap into the energy of the ruling planets at your time of birth.
