Rudraksha Information

INTRODUCTION- Rudraksh in Nature

Rudraksh is the name associated both with a Tree and its fruit or seed. In sanskrit, 'Rudraksh' (male gender) is used for the Rudraksh tree, while 'Rudraksham' (neutral gender) is used for the Fruit or Seed of the Tree.

Botanically known as ELAEOCARPUS GANITRUS ROXB, the tree is predominantly found in the mountains of Indonesia, Nepal and in some parts of the Indian Himalayas. (70% - Indonesia, Java, Sumatra, 25% - Nepal and 5% - India). Its English name is UTRASUM BEAD.

Covered by an outer shell of blue color when fully ripe, the seeds or dried fruits of this tree are known  to have a very powerful and positive influence over the lives of any person who wears them. It's medicinal and divine properties have been known and accepted since time immemorial, and it has been used for mental and physical well being, healing diseases, meditation, yoga, and for divine spiritual practices.

 ORIGIN of the Word

It has been said that Rudraksh has originated from the eyes of the Rudra, Lord Shiva. The word Rudraksh is formed with the combination of two different Sanskrit words, “Rudra” and “Aksha”. The word “Rudra” stands for Great Lord Shiva and the word “Aksha” stands for the tears of Rudra (Lord Shiva).

There is an interesting story behind the origin of Rudraksha as told in scriptures. Once after doing penance for a period of thousand years,  when Lord Shiva opened his eyes a few drops of tears fell on to the earth and they became the Rudraksha Tree.

Another story of how the Rudraksha came to be is described in the Devi Bhagavata Skandha 11. Once there lived an asura demon chief who was mighty and valiant. His name was Tripura. He defeated Devtas and deva chiefs and became emperor of the asuras. The Devtas were much grieved because of him. They went to Lord Shiva and represented their grievances. Lord Shiva thought for a while about how to kill Tripura and sat with open eyes. This sitting continued for a thousand divine years. After this prolonged time Lord Shiva winked his eyes and tears fell down from them. The Rudraksha tree originated from these tears. From the Sun-eye [the right eye] of Lord Shiva twelve types of Rudraksas came into being, from the moon-eye [left eye] sixteen kinds of Rudraksas developed, and from the fire-eye [in his forehead] ten kinds of Rudraksas. Those which originated from the Sun-eye are blood colored, those from the moon-eye are white Rudraksas and from the fire-eye are black Rudraksas. It is said that boiled Rudraksa beads are considered for the Brahmins, red Rudraksa are for Kshatriyas while white ones are for Vaishyas, and the black Rudraksha Sudra varnas.

SIGNIFICANCE

The Rudraksh bead has clefts running across its surface. These clefts are known as 'Mukh' or 'Mukhi'. The number of Mukhis a Rudraksh has plays a very important role in determining the positive influence it can have on the bearer. The Rudraksh bead is known to have single Mukh or mukhi to 21 mukh's. But for astrological purposes, ek mukhi (one faced) to chaudah mukhi ( fourteen faced) have more significance.

The most common by far is the five-faced bead, followed by the four and six-faced. Rare variations are the "Gauri Shankar", a double-joined bead, and the "Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshwara", a triple-joined bead. These are highly prized but rarely found, and fetch a high price. Single-faced Rudraksh are the most valuable and extremely rare. They are kept as family or spiritual heirlooms and are often encased in gold.

No other necklace or bead is so auspicious and powerful as one made up of Rudraksh. As per Indian astrology, Rudraksha  bead is used as a remedy for all the negative effect bearing planets.  Rudrakshas of any 'mukhi' are said to be always beneficial for the wearer unlike ratnas (gems & stones), which have to be carefully chosen. As the direct blessings of Lord Shiva is involved, no question of illness or negative results arises.

According to Puranas, wearing Rudraksh has various benefits, the most well known amongst them being:

a) Rudraksha defeats death
b) Kundalini can be awakened
c) Rudraksha ensures longevity
d) Rudraksha destroys evil spirits
e) Rudraksha helps in attaining moksha (freedom from rebirth)
f) Rudraksha is known to cure infertile women and they can have children
g) Goddess Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) resides where Rudraksha's worshipped

Note: The effect of the Rudraksha is evident after forty days of wearing it!
